Depth finder

Guys looking for a new depth finder. Any advice best for buck? What to look for?

Depends on your budget and what you plan to do with it. I went almost all out on mine. It's a humminbird 898HD SI. Would never go back to traditional sonar!

I was looking to spend around 1000-1200

Mine was 1500. Really amazing what it shows. Words do no justice. If you haven't heard of the side imaging from humminbird or lowrance then do yourself a favor and go to their websites. Prices for humminbird start around 700 but the screen is small. I went one size up and love it. Tons of other features as well.

I have a friend that fishes the BASS circuit that is sponsored by lowrance. Went out in the boat with him and was amazed with the HDS over the LMS I have. I can see where the side scan would be great for idling around the bay finding those spots that not many people know about. He had the HDS 10 in his boat and I don't have the funds for that so I went with the 7

If you can afford it, the SI/DI units are unbeatable. I'm not good at mental visualization from 2D images even with a topo map, but these units have really opened my eyes to bottom structure. I have Humminbirds, a 998 & 898 and really like them, but it's like the chevy/ford debate, all personal preference.

Just have to look. The high end lowrance and humminbird units can be found within your budget!!

I also have the Humminbird 898C SI like a couple of guys mentioned before. I like it a lot. The side imaging is crystal clear and easy to translate. I found mine online for $300 cheaper than normal retail. Look around online before you buy and you should be able to find some deals.

Looking into the Lowrance 7 elite HDI.. It's GPS, FF and Down scan.. For way less than $1000. Get it with the platinum Chip..
