garfish

Any good places around vermilion bay or pecan island you'd suggest to catch alligator gar on jugs/noodles? Been seeing pictures all over of these things and want to try it out.

Mouths of big drains adjacent to flats. Live mullet- 6" long. Scale them first and chunk em out there. Fishing them on bottom works. If you want a good shot at landing the gar use wire leader.

The cove hold some monsters

Fish the cuts from the intercostal into weeks bay I have caught some slabs in there. Let them take it forever.

Beat the fish up with a rubber mallet or something don't mash it up think bruises I've caught them on beef melt too but can't beat a mullet.

use the biggest mullet u can find. scale it. run leader thru it's mouth and out it's butthole. stick one barb of your treble hook in the mullets nose so it stays in place.

either throw it out on stout tackle or hook the leader to a clorox jug. sit back and enjoy the show.

if u are using a fishing pole, let him take it till you see him roll or u are about to spool the reel.

great eating, and great way to make a few bucks.

forgot to add....be sure he is dead before u throw him in the boat, or he will tear everything up.

any intersection or hole with current is a good spot to try.
mouth of boston is good as spot as any in the current.

I don't like to use trebles I find they drop it a lot more with a treble. They mouth it forever before they eat it and I have had them drop a treble twice as much as J hook. It doesn't really matter you gotta let them swallow it anyway.

Find pipes coming out of levee controlled marshes also. We have done well around those. As far as treble or j hooks go. Everyone has their preference, but we have had done just as good on both. I use freon drums hooked to a 5 ft piece of steel wire. The alligators tend to get our white jugs. I also prefer live scaled mullet. The crabs tend to tear up the dead and cut ones. Good luck!

it doesn't have to be a treble hook, and it doesn't have to be a big one either. sometimes i cut a barb off. if u hook the mullet right in the nose the barbs just ride along the mullets head and i've had good sucess with that system, but i am always trying to find new ideas.
most of the time the hook is in their gut and as long as it grabs something, the gar will move along the path to least resistance.
the real fight is when u get the gar alongside the boat.

Not sure where to find 6" mullet besides running to one of the weirs. Are there any weirs around the weeks bay area? Any luck using bream?

Clampy 05-31-2013 02:42 PM

They will eat anything really. I've seen people catch them on dish rags.

Yep, soaked in pogey juice. I know an old man that swears by it. He also catches catfish with cubes of dove soap.
