Snake ID??
2 Attachment(s)
Caught this little sucker in my back yard and not exactly sure what it is. I checked his eyes and its not poisonous. He was only about 10 inches long so I'm assuming its a baby.

I have never heard to check a snake's eyes to determine if it is poisonous or not.
What is it in their eyes that tells you one way or the other?
|
Pupils. Diamond shaped is poisonous. Round is not

Gotcha. That sounds like something that I would check after the head has been detatched from the body of the snake!

I don't think that's always the case, just like all poisonous snakes don't have a diamond shaped head

Lol. It was a tiny little guy. I actually just let it go, I think that's the first time I've ever let one live but I'm pretty sure it was harmless.

Every poisonous snake has a elliptical eye ( like a cat ) but some nonpoisonous do too. Like pythons.

Yeah but even he has a built in "danger, I'll kill you" message-- "Black and yellow, kill a fellow."

I find them in the yard and flower beds all the time...and the cats love to eat them. Its not a baby. they are just small and eat insects.

Not saying your wrong, but don't garter snakes usually have yellow stripes? This one looked like it had more diamond shapes on his back. Or, are there different breeds of garter snakes?
