Radar Detector

Meant to put this under a new thread but accidentally put it under the chocolate milk thread. Anyway:

I got a ticket this morning on the way back from fishing. I normally don't speed much, but I was this morning, for no reason really just felt like getting home. Sometimes I just feel the need to get moving, but most times I just let it get away from me while not paying attention. I've got cruise control and that is usually how I keep the speed I want. Anyway, I have a buddy that swears by his radar detector and says that it has saved his butt a time or two. I don't want to break the bank, but what are some decent models that can help alert me to trouble ahead.

I've got one that came with my truck. I don't use one and, never have. If you ever make it over toward Gonzales, you can have it. Don't know how big and bad it is but, free is pretty tough to beat!

I have a cheaper cobra and it works pretty well it has saved me a few tickets!! I need to invest in a new one though as it is about 5 years old and does not pick up the new radars that they use on the interstate, the ones where they stand outside the car and aim it at u like a gun lol

escort or valentine.

No matter the brand or type, none can protect you from a ticket. Only thing you can hope for is the traffic in front of you gets the radar beam before you do.

Cameron parish is the worst. Got one before Creole on the way to work early Thursday morning.

Don't think a detector would have helped me.

will not do anything for you if they radar you directly, but does work wonders if they radar someone in front of you, or if they are sitting there with the radar on. Have got a ticket with a radar detector before, but it has saved me from way more than that. Mine broke a couple years ago. Was a cobra. Need to get me another one...

My buddy is a cop and tells me they don't have to radar you to give you a ticket either. They have to pass a test where they sit on the side of the road and they drive a car past 10 times. They have to guess within 3mph at least 6 -10 times and they are certified to give a ticket without radar. Seems awfully scientific. What a joke.

I got a Valentine about 5 years ago and the only time I have ever gotten a ticket was when my detector got unplugged and I didn't realize. I did a lot of traveling every weekend and only one speeding ticket (the one mentioned above). Since then I got my radar detector hardwired and have never had any problems. I really don't like traveling without mine.

Bull****

Hey I'm just saying what he told me. I have no idea how true it is but I wouldn't be surprised at all if that's how they rock it.

Got me a good radar for all my travels. Never had a ticket for past 7 years and I get 5 in 2years . 2 were detail so no go on record and had 2 fixed 1 on record. They only get u in more trouble and more expensive tickets. And there is no legally stopping a laser.
Now I'm back to driving like a grandpa and learned an expensive lesson
300$ radar & @1k in tickets

Were you drinking when he told you this? Radar certification of an officer does require "estimating" the speed of a car. It is not part of the process to issue a citation, as we can not "guess" the speed to put on a ticket. I can, and do on a regular basis, get behind someone on I-10 and "pace" them using my GPS, then initiate a traffic stop. I do not need radar to issue a citation for speeding when I pace a vehicle. Usually, when I return to my unit, I activate my radar to let them know their detector is working. That way when I walk up to have ticket signed they ask me if I used my radar and I say "while yes I did, didn't go off while I was sitting in my car just now"?

To dispell other rumors in law enforcement -
No department has "quotas"
No officer gets paid extra for writing more tickets
No officer has an agenda
It IS officer discretion to write/not write a violator
Attitude may/may not assist in that discretion
Off duty traffic details are quite common through federal/state grants
Cops, in general, are not there to make your life difficult. They are there to do a job.
Cops did not write the laws they are there to enforce, thus they may themselves not agree with them!
And last but not least - if you are having a bad day, think about the poor soul having to direct traffic because of an idiotic driver wearing polyester clothes, a ballistic vest, and 30 pounds of gear around your waist! - No wonder they are a jerk!!!
