Sam Houston Jones State Park

Me and a couple of buddies are thinking about going camping at Sam Houston State Park and I was wondering if any of y'all have fished there before and have caught anything, or if y'all have stayed at any other park with better fishing. This trip is centered around fishing so wherever the fish are that's where I want to be (but don't we all haha). Anyways any advice or tips on where to stay would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Park is very nice and clean. It is a very high traffic area for pleasure boating in the river, fishing not great around there but lots of traffic on river for hydro sliding, tubing, cruising, or just drinking. Be careful and cautious around No Wake zones.

Fishing the Calcasieu isn't what Id call an "Anglers Hot Spot" got to work for your fish unless you just get a few on a bank.. I hear the ponds at the park are holdin fish now.. The park itself is pretty cool.

Go to Holbrook Park alot more peaceful, less boat traffic, descent bass fishing.

Thanks for all the info! We aren't bringing a boat so it will just be bank fishing unfortunately, I'll talk it over with the guys and see what they want to do. We aren't going till the end of the month so plenty of time to plan.

Well if that's the case, bring plenty of beer and go watch the boat launch. Just narrow enough to watch some idiots

Most of the ponds inside the park are full of salvinia currently. If you fish, it'll have to be in the river...

we just went out there for the evening and pretty much, as said before, all ponds are full of grass and stuff which makes them not fish able but theres pose to be some ponds in the woods to fish out there but you will have to wade out or bring a small boat of some kind

Thanks for the heads up! Yea I let them know it wasn't looking good and now they want to go saltwater, so we are staying at the intracoastal park and fishing there and making a trip to holly beach to surf fish. Thanks again for all the info!

Much more options for you there, if you pulling a camper then they have hookups at holly beach right by the water
