My Sons and Mine First Bullreds

We started off this morning hoping to get on some flounder action but that just didn't work out. So we headed to the jetties to try our luck at catching some Bullreds on cracked crab. I've never done this kind of fishing so this was a new experience for me. After some roller coaster riding to get out to the area I wanted to try. We anchored up and let the crab soaking begin. My son was the first to hook up with a brute. But not remembering to set the hook he lost after awhile of fighting it. He ended up with two break offs on 60lb braid and on a steel leader. I finally caught my first that went 23lbs a second that went 22lbs and a MONSTER stingray that broke my rod. That thing was scary looking and had my little boy run to the back of the boat after he realized what it was. I had let him reel it in but he was done as soon as I said stingray. Lol. He had the last cracked crab on when I thought he may not get to land a bullred that I was hoping he would catch. All of sudden his line takes off and the fight is on. He landed his first bullred at 16lbs. When we started to get the hook out of it we noticed the tail was covered in what looked like sand fleas. That was one of the most disgusting things I've seen. The whole time we catching the reds my son was telling to put the pictures on saltycajun. The only thing my wife caught was a bad case of the sea sickness. I never seen her so funny looking in my life. lol. My wife only took a video of the stingray and no pictures. So I don't have any pictures of it to post. I've always wanted to try this style of fishing and loved it. We made some memories that I'll never forget. Attachment 57398Attachment 57399Attachment 57400

Thats awesome man. That little man looks very happy. Thats a bummer about the ray. No ray and a broke rod. Always wanted to catch a stingray.

I tried several times hooking them and letting him reel them in but they would always get off. So I let him do most of fighting the fish by himself. He was so pumped up. Lol

Great job Dad! We have a very high hook up rate by counting to seven when the drag starts to sing before we pick up the rod. We do not set the hook.

What kinds of boat is that you are in, looks like something I might be interested in.

Oh I caught it and brought it up to the side of the boat to get my hook out. My wife was sea sick and didn't take any pictures. I didn't want to put the thing in the boat with us. Lol. They had several caught in the area we was fishing.

I keep a .22 and a box of colibris in the truck when we surf fish just incase someone catches one. Pop it in the head and machete the tail then in the ice chest. I've heard they are some pretty good eating. Wouldn't mind trying one.

I can certainly see how dealing with one in a boat would present some serious issues versus doing it on land that's for sure. They aren't the friendliest of critters to deal with.
