11-7-09 "The Pen"

Made my first trip to the pen today with my dad. Not knowing what to do we trolled through the pen area around the big yachts and out into the bayou. I picked up a 16" red right off the bat as we made our way out into the bayou. That was the only bite for the next two hours. The grass was so thick along the smooth cord grass it was impossible to work any lures. After fighting the grass and the wind we decided to head back into the pen and try our luck at some specks on artificial. I anchored up almost directly across from the launch and threw a chartreuse with black flecks sand eel. I hooked a keeper trout and the bite was on for a while. I managed to catch a "W"all hanger:*****: before we moved about 200 yards up and caught the rest of what we came home with. A dozen or so keeper specks and another 25 or 30 dinks. All specks caught on sand eel and tsunami swim baits. Not a bad day for my first time. I am headed back tomorrow with the wife to try for at least a limit. :smokin:

Went back to the pen this morning but nothing worth posting about. I figured I would give the update on my post from yesterday. I came home with 8 keeper specks but I was the only one fishing in the boat. If I would have had someone else with me I think we could have had a lot more fish. Probably had 25 or 30 dinks so I had decent action. From what I could see I was the only person catching fish. The wind was blowing about 20 mph when I left. All fish caught on sand eel jrs. No pics it would have been a sad sight.
