What is this plug for??

Can someone tell me what this plug is for? I have had the motor for about a year and am just now noticing it. It is pretty tucked away as you can see from this pics. This is a 30HP Tohatsu M30A2.

What color wires run to that plug?

I would imagine its for a code reader to see what fault code it has.

rather stupid to put any kind of plug outside the cowling where it could be protected and kept clean

Unless that motor has an ecm, that is not a plug for a reader. What color are the wires going to the plug?

Turns out it's a receptacle for a lamp...but it looks like it shares the same wires as the tachometer. Im not sure if this is just to power the tachometer or if the tachometer can derive the RPMs from this connection as well.
