Keep your distance from others

Been hearing of some drama on the lake recently, lol

copied and pasted this...

Drift fishing- Do not run in front or behind someone that is doing a drift. The reason is they could have fish in front of them or behind them. Give a drifter a minmum of 250 yards each side. Also do not drive over marked reefs. Why screw up fishing for everyone when it doesnt take much to just drive around. When several people are doing a drift DO NOT get on plane to go back around for another drift. just idle around patiently and start your drift again. The reason for this is the wake you create will hit the boats that are on the drift and the boat noise will scare the fish off.

Wade Fishing- DO NOT BURN SHORELINES!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the worst thing you can do. Keep a minimum of 200 yards or more off of every shoreline. When pulling in to a wade and there are boats and waders on the same shoreline you should turn off your motor and troll in. If someone is already on your spot then find another of your honey holes to fish in or get there earlier next time.

this is correct

and also remember that your wake affects people a long ways off.

if you see someone fishing slow down no matter where you are.

In boats its one thing, but it a kayak its a very serious concern, esp with falling water and air temps. it only takes 10 minutes to get hypothermic and lots of times kayaks are at least 30 mins from their vehicle, we had some guy blow right past us while we were drifting yesterday.

not sure i worry much about others wake as much as engine noise

Good Info

Good post I think most of the un courteous mistakes people make on the water are from ignorance.

I agree with watching your boat wake and I always slow when I can and not "throw" a bigger wake on another fisherperson. But......there are times when you don't see another boat in time to slow down.

This happened just last week when I went to the river to run my engine. I came around a little bend in the river, and a boat was fishing over near the bank. All I could do was continue going in a straight direction over toward the far bank to stay as far away [~ 100 yards] as I could. Slowing down would have been worse for this person.

I run right through the boats in turners bay next to the channel, that is a navigation way and if they choose to fish there so be it.

But last time i was out on the water. I had a boat go way out of his way and run right in my drift just to come and see if i was catching anything. That kind of thing burns me up.

sorry for the stupid question: What's a "marked reef" look like? White poles? LSU buoys?

yak'em-n-stack'em 11-16-2009 04:49 PM

yea lots of people dont understand just slowing down doesnt do it, you have to get completely off of plane to reduce wake when you just back it off you push more water than on plane or idling
