Lower unit question

Is there any tricks out there to unclog the tiny water pressure speed odmeter hole on the back side of the lower unit?
Mine is clogged from the trash sticks in the vermillion river.

I used a dental pick, but the clog was right at the front of the hole.

I see your in Lafayette, if you would like to borrow one PM me.

Does that hole have an exit some some where

Use a small drill bit with your finger. If you use a drill be very careful when drilling it out and don't set it to deep. You can also disconnect the hose where it comes out the gear case and use a air nozzle and blow back into it

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the hose runs up to the engine cowl & is connected to the engine/electronics. The tube faces forward in the lower unit & measures water pressure in the tube to calculate boat speed.

Water pressure comes from the water pump and the pressure reading comes off the block. Speedo comes of the pressure from the water that is pushed into the gear case through the little hole in the front of it or the pickup that you mount to the outside on the transom

Take the tube off your analog gauge or connection to electronics and use an air compressor to blow it out.

That would be the little black hose thats going down into the lower unit. On the back of the mid section of the motor?

You gonna spend more time unclogging them speedo hoses than you gonna want to...they always clog...If you have electric gps for speed just use that. I never had one stay working long enough to want to use it...just my opinion

try to suck it back out with a shop vac first but if that doesn't work take it off then use weed eater string or small wire to run through the hole to unblock it and compressed air to flush it good after you clear it.

the key is you don't want to shove it in and have it block something else up down the line that you "cant" get to

CajunChristian 03-29-2014 04:10 PM

That "hole" is called the "pitot". Most manufacturers use those type speedometers as factory installed. They are about as accurate as the weatherman. Old trick was to drill out the pitot, guaranteed 5 mph increase.
GPS is more dependable and much more accurate.

I got it fellas thanks for all the advise. I used a small drill bit and bread tie wire. Water started dripping out.

I just replace my speed odometer with a MercMoniter. That hole is always getting plugged. I just use Gps for MPH.

I use a gold white perch hook. If it is to hard to push through I use a small finishing nail. Vise grips to push and pull with. Last time mine plugged I had to drill. I saw speedo on my TX21 Triton hit 80 mph. Well on gps it does a little over 71+

I don't know why boat manufacturers even put speedometers' in the dash. They are useless as all get out. That hole stays clogged up anyway. I removed my speedo gauge and put in a flush mount compass in its place. That way if the GPS goes out I still have a compass at least.

This is where most of those 90 mph boats come from. Removing the speedometer and using a GPS usually slows them down by 10-15 mph. That GPS satellite signal is very hard on top end speed:shaking:
