Sun dried tuna

Whille I was in Hawaii I got ahold of som strips of tuna from a local tuna fisher.the guy was a captin that cought 20,000 lb at a time. He would dry the tuna on his boat. He had this box with screens and kept um on top da bridge.
Any one know abot this I can't rmember what he called it. He had a name for it.
I want to do the same thing.
It was good stuff. I think he put salt water on it at some point which turned whit as it dried. As good as beef jerky if not better.
I used to snack on it while surf fishing and hiking .
It was good for high energy and protien.
Ias I remember it was taken from top quarter of the blue fin. Some of the best meat.
