Saturday Trout Slam!

4-26-14.... Just another great trout slamming day on the DU! I fished with Jeff Smith and Mike Stradt and this was their third day of fishing the DU! We arrived at our first stop to find calm seas and plenty of hungry gnats. After a successful day the previous day on topwater we were all chunking the lures in hopes of a repeat slam. On my first cast I hooked a small needlefish in which a big trout tried to eat it as I was reeling it in to the boat. The mullets were thick on the shallow reef and it did not take long for the first strike. We caught a couple trout but we could see the topwater bite was not to be on this morning. That's how it is in the month of April as every day is different. April is a hard month to fish trout as they don't stay in one place for long as they push southward to the gulf to spawn. However, the trout were still on the reef and we had to change our tactics. We broke out the swimbaits in the colors bunker and glow/chartreuse,Wedgetails along with the all new VuDu mullet that I received just a day earlier from Egret Lures. This lure is a killer and if you like to pitch swimbaits this brand new lure is for you. The action is simply incredible and just like the VuDu shrimp its nearly indestructible. It comes in 5 colors and the trout ate it up! Just when you think it cant get any better in regards to the Wedgetails,Kick-a-Mullets and VuDu shrimp these guys come up with yet another winner in the VuDu Mullet. Long story short, Jeff & Mike pounded the trout catching their 50 fish limit along with a few good reds and flounder. The reds were still there as the previous day but most were over the 27 in. mark and we really pushed hard to target trout on that day. We actually left the redfish location with them biting and schools of reds all around the boat to target the trout a few miles away. It was a great day to say the least and I know without a doubt that Jeff Smith and his crew are sold on south Louisiana! They caught over 300 fish in 3 days and they said they had never been that productive anywhere else before in their travels. I'm glad we were able to showcase our area to them as people just don't know what they are missing 'Down In Dularge'! Good luck fishing.
