How to fish for Gar

After smoking my first gar, (given to me by bro-in-law, caught by someone else), I want to catch attempt to catch one or two on my next trip out. What's the best rig set up and bait selection for garfish? I fish mainly out of Catahoula Lake where I've seen them before. My cousin actually hooked one once while fishing for cats using chicken liver but I think it was a fluke.

Any thoughts?? Thanks!

It depends on the size of the fish you are targeting. This works for me; snapper poles with 150lb braid and a 24" steel leader. For bait we use 8-12" mullet(scaled). Use a coat hanger to run the leader through the mullet length wise then attach a 3/0 treble hook. Clip on a cork and give the fish enough time to swallow the bait.
