Fire Bug in Lafayette..
Whew! It's about time to catch this arsonist that's running around the Downtown/Northside! We have been rocking an rolling 2-4 fires a night in one district since Wednesday night..... I must have missed the memo that the cool thing to do now is burn vacant buildings!
Last night 2 burned within a half mile of each other. While we were fighting one the other came in....
Rant over!

People with too much time on their hands. These are all abandoned houses or are they occupied?

All I believe have been vacant and along the thruway or a block or so off. The one off of N Washington was still under construction and not close to the thruway but still in the general vicinity. Seems that most are buildings that were bought by DOT in anticipation of the hwy 90/ I49 corridor.

For awhile in the colder months it was a lot of bums starting fires in vacant buildings with their camp fires. This seems a bit more deliberate though....

Ohhh yeah..... We had Alton and Buster with us this morning. Now don't get me wrong I love my job but all night every night in vacant buildings gets old! I feel for our arson guys bc they haven't gotten a night off yet...

I wonder if the houses were known for squatters and drug activity? It could be angry neighbors doing what they think is community service. Either way, they'll get caught soon enough.

This reminds me of that documentary on the fires in Detroit. http://www.detroitfirefilm.org/
They have so many arson fires of vacant buildings that they adopted a policy of containing the fire and letting the structure burn down. It was a better option than risking men to put out the fire and save the property.

I could care less of an abandoned piece of slum collection being burned. I do however have a big problem when it is done by an arsonist that puts innocent people and our fire/police services in jeopardy. I think it will be an alert officer that rolls up on he/she riding with an accelerant that breaks the case. Has to be someone local with knowledge of what properties are junked.

My prediction.
Homeless guy mad about salvation army.
Not a quiet guy. Puts down property owners with vacant houses he could live in.
Not local guy just hitched here for warm weather.
True indigent with no worries about getting caught .life would be better in jail.
