Buddy bearing on trailer

My buddy bearing fell off my trailer and I bought another. Problem is I can't get the thing to stay on after going over a bump.

It's just a pressed fit. Make sure you tap it all the way in. If it still shakes loose you may have to replace the hub.

Is that hard to do or that gas to be done by someone at a trailer shop

No, it's easy. Just remove the large nut on the axle and the whole thing slides right off.

Hubs with bearings are so cheap I just replace them every 2 years instead of buying bearings and messing with all that grease and stuff.

Cheapest I found was at Thib's Trailers in Duson.

Make sure you buy galvanized hubs if you fish saltwater...

That's what I do too, galvanized hubs are like $52 at academy.

They sell Bearing buddies in different sizes. And the sizes can all be really close. You need to measure your hubs with a set of calipers to make sure you buy this right bearing buddies.

I've also had better luck with the Walmart knock offs too

Buddy Bearing

If you are sure you have the right size buddy bearing you can take it off and lay in face down(grease zerk down) on a smooth surface and take a small chisel and make four notches on the other end of it. The small notches will help it stay in and will not hurt or damage anything. In fact any time any bearing cover is taken off it is a good idea to do this. Just use a four pound sledge hammer to hit the chisel.

I had the same problem. I bought two different sets of buddy bearings the exact same size except a different brand and it fit. If that doesn't work you could buy a size larger and grind it down.

You have to remember when you grind something like that down you will not get it perfectly round and water can and will seep in, and for some odd reason water and grease usually ends up on the side of the road with a failed bearing.
