Atchafalaya National Park?

What's ya'lls thoughts on this? I'm especially curious what any of you boys that fish the basin regularly--especially in this area--think of it.

Been fishing the basin all my life and increasing the boat traffic and sight seers doesn't appeal to me. Guess I'm selfish.

How would this change anything except for having Park Rangers telling you what you cant do.

And my thought on that is: what are they trying to accomplish?

You aren't going to get tens of thousands of people traveling through the Basin every year like you do Yosemite and Yellowstone.

So they are going to change the culture of the area forever....for what?

I honestly don't think making it a National Park does anything for the area. They state that the objective is to protect the 1,000 to 1,200 year old cypress trees in this part of the Basin. When was the last time there were mass harvests of Baldcypress? 100 years ago?

They talk about how it becoming a State Park is not a good idea because they tend to cut down trees to build roads for access, but yet the Sierra Club wants to provide more access to the Basin. How exactly?!?!?!?

And who's land do they plan on doing this on? Only a small percent is owned by the state or the feds.

It's all state land in the proposal.

They have been trying to do this for years. Why ? How about NO HUNTING , NO COMMERCIAL FISHING . Have you heard of PETA and not the chapter of People Eating Tasty Animals ????? Just my opinion for the little its worth...

Anything involving the Federal government is bad for Louisiana. It will no longer be the Sportsman's Paradise once the Feds start regulating, and regulating, and regulating......and regulating.......an regulating.........

If the federal government gets involved, little good can happen.

And what's worse is Landrieu is supporting this. I want to know why they believe this is necessary. What threat is there to swamp land owned by the state????? Hmmm?

No hunting was the first thing I thought about. I do not believe possessing a firearm is legal on any National Park. Anyone know which areas they are looking at? From the article it sounds wide reaching. Could include Serburne, Indian Bayou, etc.

Next thing you know, they will have a limit of 2 bream per person,and only 9 days per year to catch them.

No, I think it is St. Mary, St. Martin, and Iberia maybe? One article I read said it was the area around Lake Fausse Point State Park. I've looked for a map of this proposal, but they are being secretive about it it would seem.

Go figure......

Just found something on the basin buddies website that states the proposed area is 100,000 acres outside the West Levee. These guys want public support, but don't even have a map showing what they are proposing???? Shady...

My guess would be from around Sandy Cove boat launch south to around Verdunville with the levee and the river being the borders. That area is state owned for the most part.

They would also stop all commercial activities. that includes crawfish fisherman and oil exploration.

Precisely my thoughts. I find it unsettling that the Sierra Club quietly started pushing for this to go to congress with little public input. I believe it is precisely because they know it would not be a popular move. A lot of people are going to be affected by this.

Again, why is it so important that state lands be made into a national park?

I don't think the state would ever let land be annexed into federal control and loose the possibility of revenue from O&G.

Don't think they would have a choice. If its a National Park, its federal land. The preservationists would fight that, especially Acadiana Sierra Club, since that is part of the reason they proposed this. They don't want it touched. And since the state told them to proceed, I'm sure they already know what could happen.
