Now hunting Indian Bayou

Looking to do a bow hunting close to home. Anyone have any experience out there? Is it worth the short trip if I get some decent scouting in?

IMO it's worth it in Bow Season.
I don't mess with the area too much after that.

That's cool! Just looking for a place to make some hunts close to home when I can't run to the lease up north.

The deer there are hard to pattern (IMO) but I've killed a few with my rifle there... Also u have sherburne or thistlethwaite that both have deer that are all about the same distance from Lafayette.. Pick a an area and study a topo and u should be alright..

Hopefully I can get enough time in there to scout out a spot and see how I do...

It's a nice place to hunt...and I think this year will be above average...supposed to have lots of rain which is good there (I find) when it is flooded.
The place is really kept up. You can either hunt by boat or 4 wheeler. I camp in "happy town" right across the Atchafalaya levee (East of IB) and hunt there regularly. We'll be there for squirrel weekend fo sho!

I made a few hunts there last year for bow season, but I need to do some more scouting. My buddy shot 6pt there 2 yrs ago

I hope your buddy killed a 4 x 2 [6 pt.].

IB had Buck restrictions [2011-12 season] were: must be 4 points on one side or Spike to be legal.

Get off the normal access areas or you will be disappointed with the flashlights all around you opening morning.

bow season should not be bad with regards to other hunters. The woods have a lot of eyes in rifle season.
Comparing Thistlewaite, Sherburne and IB, they are really different habitats. Thistlewaite is very thick, with a heavy palmetto understory. Even rifle shots are close.
Sherburne and IB are similar, but IB probably has a more open canopy, a little less underbrush etc.

That's what I am planning to do. Just have to get out there and check it out.... I see areas on the maps that may be good but I I'm sure others see em too...lol...
Going to be a culture shock hunting swampy hardwoods after growing up hunting the piney hills...

Make sure you fill out a self clearing permit, got a couple in the truck if you need. Don't hunt in the management area, we have property that borders it on the west side. Just keep a couple just if the need comes up!

Jcredeur 09-19-2014 05:45 PM

I have the brochure with the card that you sign and carry on you.
Is there additional permit that you are supposed to carry?

Permit

That's it

Gasper Master 09-19-2014 09:49 PM

if you kill make sure you fill out the deer harvest report card and drop it in the bin. YOu can get them at the main parking areas.

Had two federal agents come visit me at work the week after i shot a doe during bow season of the first year they started it b/c i didn't fill one out.....

Jcredeur 09-19-2014 09:51 PM

Oh wow!

K W 09-19-2014 10:46 PM

Yeah they do have fb and are on all the forums and check em regularly..

Remember.... @ IB = one deer per day.

WMA's = 2 deer [Buck & doe] per day [except when it is Bucks only]

Bucks must have 4 points [min.] on one side...... OR..... spike.
