Fixed or mechanical broadheads? Or is it personal preference?

Fixed from what I have been told is mechanicals don't always open!

I have always shot fixed. I've shot 8 deer and none of them WALK more than 10 yards before dropping.

I prefer mechanicals. They fly just like a field tip. And the way they are made they cannot not open on impact. I suppose they could glance or deflect on a hard quartering shot though.

I had great success with Spitfire 125 grain mechanical broadheads and Easton 2219 bolts, after trying lots of different fixed blades with poor results. Even if you think you have everything tuned and dialed in with fixed blades, a bit of wind changes everything. If the wind doesn't blow, you can do well with fixed blades out to 25 yards. I'm sure some guys learn to dope the wind with them.

I use the spitfires also and they are great. With a fixed blade on my bolts, I can't hit the broad side of a barn

What brand crossbows yall shooting?

I bought an entry level (read--cheap) Barnett Quad to see if I'm gonna like it or not. Pleased with the accuracy of it so far.

I shot a Ten Point Woodsman for many years. My kids and I killed a lot of deer with them. We had two.
