Hog Hunting when I'm home
So I'll be coming home for Thanksgiving this year. I really want to get on some hogs while I'm home with my AR-15 and I want to get my wife on one too as she's never shot a hog or her AR-15 yet since its not really complete at all. So anyone know what WMA's would give me the best chance of getting my wife on one? Also, anyone have any hogs they want to go missing?

I recommend that you DO NOT go hog hunting on the Thanksgiving weekend on a WMA.
This weekend is always either-sex Deer hunting and usually there is lots of hunters out that weekend. Monday.... you will have very few hunters. Just check that Deer season is open at the WMA when you want to go. |
Yeah I thought about that about 5 minutes after I posted this… Deer it is

Richard k yancey. Went up there for turkey season. No shortage of hog sign in there

I would make sure it's legal to hunt(esp in WMAs), with a 22 cal bullet. Maybe hog hunting is different than deer. I hear different things.
|
I believe you can only carry a weapon that matches the season that is open. I think a
.22 sidearm with ratshot is allowed as well. Pretty useless if you ask me. Like swamp said I'd read up on it. |

If you have a boat Sabine island wma is infested with hogs and they go by same rules as outside of wma.

how did .22 come in to play? its a 223/556 which yes is a 22 cal diameter but nothing in the same sentence. you can get 75gr bullets easily with the 223 and you can definitely hunt hogs and deer with it. rule of WMA is you can carry a pistol only of .22 cal with rat shot during bow season. you can carry a hunting caliber pistol to hunt with if its gun season. also make sure you only have a 5rd mag in that ar-15 or else youll be losing it if you get caught. cant hunt with a bigger mag than that. :shaking: |

Good info there. It would definitely suck to lose a gun like that. |
yea i used to run around on there with my ar just in my truck and i had no clue. you cant even have any gun or pistol in your vehicle that isnt compliant.
|
OK that's good to know. I was told a while back that deer hunting with an AR-15 was not legal-regardless of gr bullet. So the key is centerfire? Thanks for the info.

Center-fire rifles and handguns larger than .22 caliber rimfire, shotgun slugs or shot larger than BB lead or F steel shot cannot be carried onto any WMA except during modern and primitive firearm deer seasons and during special shotgun season for feral hogs on Atchafalaya Delta, Pass-a-Loutre, Pointe-aux-Chenes and Salvador WMAs (see individual WMA season schedules for specific regulations).
