Some may disagree but I can see how this could happen. A black bear and a black wild hog look similar. Add to the mix, having to make a quick decision in a thick marshy area or in thick woods, low light conditions or long distance shot - and it makes identification even more difficult. Bears are not rare in the Cypermort point/Avery Island area. I see um crossing the road or in fields all the time. Knowing this I WOULD NOT PULL THE TRIGGER on a solo black hog unless I was 100% sure (like if it was with a pack of other hogs or right under my stand). I'm not certain but I would bet that this guy just made a mistake and wasn't poaching bears or killed it just to do it. He fessed up to it and is taking his licks. His wallet will be much lighter after all of this.

I agree with sweets on this one. Last year sitting on a deer stand on a pipeline, the same stand I had killed 4 hogs off of already that year, I saw something. To this day I can't tell you if it was a big hog or a bear. Granted, I wouldn't have taken the shot because we had seen the bear tracks before, but to someone that doesn't know any better and didn't know the bear was in the area I could see how it could be a mistake.

Hmmm 12 gauge with buckshot though?? Had to be 50 yards or less from him when he shot it. Should be able to tell the difference at that distance. Maybe he shot it out of fear.

I agree with your post right up until this part.

I agree with you guys that this can easily be a simple mistake was made but it isn't clear if he fessed up or the hunting club he hunts with turned him in for it. until that is made clearer its hard to say he fessed up to anything.

I give the club props for doing the right thing here. the jury is still out on him in my book.

Don't shoot unless you know what your shooting... Problem solved... They do look alike but if you can't tell em apart don't shoot it..

I agree, they can easily be mistaken, especially in low light. I know a very good hunter who did the same thing many years ago, in low light. He turned himself in, paid the price.
I don't think this guy was poaching, he just didn't exercise due diligence! There is a pretty good population of bear near Cypremort, folks there need to be careful. Some of these bears have chips implanted by LDWF to monitor their dispersion, they can tell when one has been shot, just because it did not have a collar does not mean LDWF does not know where the bear is.

Totally agree 100%...if you have not identify your target DO NOT pull the trigger....to many times I have heard and read of people killing either wild game or another hunter cause they did not positive identify their target.....:pissed::pissed:

Unless it is charging you, then blast it with buckshot... In the face
