Pasture Weed Control
 

Guys,
We are trying to restore a pasture back to it's glory days. Ever since the floods from Rita and Ike it seems like the grass that forms large clumps has moved in. I am not sure of what it is called, most of the old timers call it mud grass. We are looking for a way to get rid of it short of plowing the whole pasture to let the Bermuda take back over. I am at a loss as to what to spray since it does not appear to be a broadleaf. Do any of y'all have experience with this?

It's all over Vermillion Parish. Spraying it would be a losing battle.

Yeah it's taking over a pasture in Forked Island. May just try and plow it under in the fall when we Plant the rye.

Had the same thing happen in my hay field after Rita. Used a herbicide called Velpar. I think it even has a no graze period. Forgot the price, but it ain't cheap. Google "smut grass control".

plow it twice. once to break up the grass, then again to break up the small clumps that sprout in a couple weeks. You might spray the whole pasture with glyphosate before you plow if you like spraying stuff.

Probably going to try it this way. Going to more than likely section the pasture off and do it a section at a time. Keep enough graze able and work the rest.

try not to overgraze, because it will come back. Thats one of the benefits of a rotational grazing system is I give the other plants enough time to grow back and outcompete it. You might also try liming as smut grass tends to grow better in the acidic soils we normally have here. You might do a soil test first though.

Ok. I think the way it got such a strong foot hold was with it being overgrazed.

I see the Velpar is $245 for 2.5 gallons. How much area would this cover??

The rate is 3 pints per acre and there are 8 pints per gallon.
