minn koto trolling motor
 

Ok, so I'm a air head. Stopped at big lake to try my new to me boat. I head up to moss and put the trolling motor in and everything worked good. move down close to turner's and put the trolling in the water...nothing. This was just a quick trip to check the boat out. I got back to the launch and loaded the boat. While I was securing everything I noticed no plug in the boat. (yes, I almost sunk the new to me boat on the first day) The box where the two batteries and onboard charger are was wet. I don't know how much water was in there and don't know if charger is damaged. The charger shows that it is charging when I first hook it up but the ready lights don't come on and I have no power to trolling motor. Other than the normal.."some people should not own a boat", cheap shot....Any ideas

If you flooded the battery box area and battery tender/changer with SALT water, its more then likely toast, or will be soon

You should always have a breaker switch on your trolling motor

X2....Fuses eventually corrode and give problems...BPS and academy sells a 50 amp and 80 amp that you connect to battery post and then connect your troll motor wire to the breaker...You could try disconnect charger and hook troll motor to see if it works...

Thanks guys. The replies have all shed some light on the problem. I appreciate all of you and since the boat is in Louisiana and I'm in Texas, I will have to get back with you after I try a few things.

most chargers are water proof so unless its a cheap one it should be fine but I would take apart and clean and spray all electrical connections with wd40 then reconnect using dielectric grease to stop and corrosion from starting.

the trolling motor im sure just tripped the breaker and it just needs to be reset, most are manual reset button type

blonde moment..."ouch" I'm sure I have the plug problem under control. I have a slip at big lake and don't take it out. I didn't locate a breaker switch. That said, not sure about charger, watch proof/cheap.. prior owner

Those are hard to come by! I've been on the list at Hebert's and Spicer's for a year or so now!

I put mine right on top of the battery with a 3" copper bar to connect it to the battery with a connector bar like this

I just took a 1/2" copper tubing and beat it flat then drilled holes in it. you just want a good solid bar that wont rust and can handle the amps so an 1/8" copper or aluminum bar is fine for this or tubing like I used.

Thanks for the great idea keakar. stay tuned for updates. I am heading over tomorrow with the trailer and bringing it home. I was on a waiting list just as long but I have had the slip since 2006. It makes it nice when you don't have to pull it over and back everytime.
