A Louisiana State Senior Trooper is in serious condition after being shot while conducting a traffic stop near Bell City, La.

According to LSP Sgt. James Anderson, Senior Trooper Steven Vincent, 43, was responding to a vehicle driving in an unsafe manner on La Hwy 14 east near Fruge Road, Sunday around 2:45 p.m.

When Trooper Vincent located the vehicle, it was in a ditch on LA Hwy 14.

A struggle ensued between the driver and Vincent, which resulted in Vincent being shot in the head.

Trooper Vincent was transported to a Lake Charles hospital and listed in critical condition.

Louisiana State Police Colonel Michael D. Edmonson says, the driver was detained by passing motorists as additional citizens gave aid to the trooper until medical assistance arrived on the scene.

He also identified the 13-year State Police veteran as the brother of Iowa Police Chief Keith Vincent.

Vincent received a meritorious service award for a 2012 traffic stop that resulted in the arrest of a Slidell bank robbery suspect.

Trooper Vincent also has a second brother on the Louisiana State Police force.

The accused shooter, Kevin Daigle, 54 of Lake Charles, is believed to have been impaired during the incident, and is also in the hospital.

Louisiana State Police will hold a news conference at 9 p.m. at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.

Praying for the Trooper and his family and fellow Troopers. How can someone be so mean. Forgive me Lord for saying, but I hope this thug was in the hospital for the beating that the heroic citizens gave him. He should have met his maker in my opinion.

Yep. Just saw that. Such a shame and such a senseless act. Hope they hang Daigle. Trooper Vincents family has lost a son/father and husband for no reason. Prayers to all of his family.

Yes there should be a fast track system in place for things like this, but it's not the world we live in anymore!!!!
