8/29/2015 Great day to be on BL

I will begin stating that it was a beautiful Saturday morning on BL with little wind even though I was solo. After catching my first speck ever on a topwater along the shipchannel south in the lake, there was little to show along the ship channel about a quarter mile from the steam engine from about 6 to 8am. However, after spotting several boats to the east in the middle of the lake, I noticed birds working. As I maneuvered close to the first two sets of birds, I noticed the birds were having a hard time staying up with whatever they were chasing and the boats pursuing were also moving very fast with their trolling motors trying to get an angle to cast with little success. It seemed as if the birds weren't holding very well and they were probably reds. I began driving the lake and when I saw birds working and then setting down, I worked close and drifted into them casting around them. In the timespan of about 90 minutes, I was able to pick up another 10 trout along with gafftop, hardheads, and croaker on vudu shrimp under a YMB popping cork. I was also able to get into position to cast a tequila gold Norton sand eel into a herd of bull reds as they surfaced and landed about a 29 inch red after 10 minutes of being horsed around the boat. I went back to my original starting place along the ship channel and the water was gorgeous green, the best I have seen it all year. I caught three more keeper trout but had a hard time getting that 1t5th one as the ladyfish began eating the tails off my vudu shrimp and at $4.00 per shrimp that trout would pretty expensive. I headed in about 12pm satisfied with a fun day on the water doing what I love to do and at the same time providing fish fry dinner for family on Sunday. I ended up with (14) trout from 13" to 17" and (1) bull red.

I also got to meet Jared Adams Saturday at Brown's, having recognized him immediately from his picture posts on this site.

Solid trip. Just a small tip tho...I've found that when you're fishing under birds, the trout are not usually concerned with what lure you are throwing. If you are losing expensive baits, try throwing something old and cheap next time. I bet it'll catch just as well under the birds.

Yep. I have a pile of old baits in the cup holder of my boat just for bird fishing
