Cold Weather Fishing
 

Have not fished much during cold months. Where are good areas to try? Not asking for honey holes. Just general areas.

Depends on the weather, mainly either before a cold front or immediately after a cold front.

Generally speaking... before a frontal passage the fish can be pulled up in shallow coves and secondary bays that have water in the 3-5 foot range... reds can be shallower than that on shell and mud shorelines.

After the frontal passage with high north winds, dropping tide, increasing barometer most of the trout will pull out deeper if they can

If you find some shell or oyster reef in areas that are shallow, close to deeper water nearby then that's a good starting point. Reds will get pulled a little further away from the shoreline but it won't affect them as much as trout. It can be the best time of year to fish for reds, and they can be more consistent through the winter compared to trout.

For the deep areas if you can find some structure like rock embankments or something like that that fall into 10-12 or 15 foot of water that is also a good starting point.
