Sabine Island Tips?

I was interested in fishing the Sabine Island WMA area, but know zero about it. I presume I would have to launch at Niblett's Bluff, but don't know the area at all, so should I head north or south? Should I fish mainly in the river or do I need to fish inside the island bayous? Do bass have a 14 inches minimum in the Old River or is it only in the main body of the Sabine River?
Thanks for any help!

I usually fish the cuts south of Nibletts but have done well north too.

According to the rules there is no size limit until you hit the main Sabine River-Old River split. Then from there until I-10 it's a shared 14" min. From what I understand you can traverse from the main river to I-10 with small fish in the box as long as you don't stop to fish. I'm leery to do this because seems like it could be up to an LDWF agent's discretion. I usually make sure I don't have any short fish or stay north of the main river-old river junction.

Please correct me if I'm wrong guys.

Thanks, that cleared up my concerns! I wouldn't think you would get in trouble by just having smaller bass if you were running. I need to go explore the place I guess, so I can get a feel for it.

This is correct. I've been checked a couple times down there. One just south of Nibletts and once on main river when I had smaller fish. The warden told me that unless they see you fishing the main river you're good to go. I as well mostly fish south of Nibletts. Caught a few up north but just can't figure it out I guess.

I haven't launched at Nibletts in a long time. Would like to get back up there to ransack it and check it out. Usually launch at Burnt Out Bridge and fish main river and canals South of I-10.
I don't even try to understand the size limit thing on the Sabine River. I do love it out there, though.

I've heard that people's trucks get broken into launching at the B.O. Bridge, have you ever had that that happen or is it not as bad as they say?

I've never had a problem there, but it's a perfect isolated place for it to happen.

Don't leave anything where it can be seen to temp someone to break in.

This happened to me...... at a boat launch in the Atchafalaya basin 3 weeks after Katrina hit Southeast Louisiana. They took $ 20 worth of stuff.... including some very old tennis shows. Cost me $ 100 for a new piece of glass and a few hour work to put it in.

I've heard several reports about the Atchafalaya Basin public launches not being very safe and they aren't isolated, so I guess the trick is to not leave anything in your truck that thieves might want. How do you even get to the Burned Out Bridge to launch?

I-10 to Toomey Starks exit
Head South
Take right on Broussard Rd.
Left on Old Hwy. 90
This dead-ends at launch.

Thanks, I appreciate all the help!
