Coast Guard Regs. on signalling devices.
I need some guidance!! I am confused about the USCG regulations regarding VSD's. I have a 20 ft. boat and occasionally venture out to open water such as Bay Raccourci. The regs. say that when I go in open water I need a signalling device(s). My question is, if I just go out in the daytime can I get by with just a CG approved flag, that is described in the regs. Or, do I need 3 flares whether I go in outside waters during the day OR night? Thanks for you help.

Hate to be Fire-Marshall Bill but regardless of the law, these are what if items. If you needed to signal someone @ night would you rather a Flag or a Flare?

Well.....you only need them when you need them. But you never know when you will need them!

Thanks for the comments!
Let me ask this:: If I am in outside waters and I DO NOT have flares on board but DO have a CG certified flag, and its during daylight hours, am I in violation?

Yes, time of day does not matter. Flares are still used to signal during the day also. It's about the waters you are in that the requirements are based on. |
Thanks Redaddiction!
O.k., now where is the best place to buy flares? I have to think Academy may have them and have the best price. Thanks.

water proof case ( with paper work) is a good place to keep them
