Water line to barn question
 

I need to install a waterline from my house to my barn and wanted to see what you all thought on the size. There will be a couple horses in the barn and some chickens. From my house to the barn, its about 250'.

Would 1" be big enough?

What are you wanting to do it in the barn with the water - just fill up some water buckets? 1" should be plenty unless you will need a bunch of gpm and odds are your source couldn't supply any bigger sufficiently anyway.

It is hard to say without more information.


If all you want to do is fill up a water trough.... and not really concerned how long it takes, 1" will do fine.


To determine [estimate] how much water flow will you get from a 1" line depends on several things. Will you be connecting the new line from the line that feeds your house or connecting somewhere in the house?


What size existing water lines do you have? How much water pressure do you typically have at your house?


If you will have 1" line from the main line all the way to the barn.... you can expect to get about 5 to 8 gpm flow at the barn. If you connect to the back of your house where the line size is 3/4" or smaller this will restrict the flow. Max flow might be 2 to 4 gpm.


Also the type line you run would effect these numbers a little. Will you be using steel pipe [galvanize], PVC or black tubing? In some cases, steel pipe in not good to the very high corrosion rates.

What size meter?

it is metered water and it looks as though the main line is around 1 1/4". I will be filling up buckets and squirting off chicken crap with a water hose.

If it's 1.25 outflow on meter n you reduce to 1" , you will have no prob with pressure . Flow should be fine as well for what u want to do

I have 1inch to my troughs from T'd off from the pipe supplying my house works fine. I added a shutoff just passed where my house ties in just for in case.

How deep should you bury the PVC pipe?

18" should be plenty in Louisiana

I don't think you would need the line 18" deep.... unless he lives where in gets below 15 F for a few days.






In south Louisiana..... probably 6" deep would not freeze. But for piece of mind, I would bury it 10" deep.

12" is more then enough here.

I'm in south LA. I was thinking 6-12 inches. 18 sounds like overkill.

I have lots of water lines run underground on my farm. 12" is plenty.

As a Liscensed Plumber, 3/4" will be plenty for supply size and 12" is official frost line for my section of the State, NW.
