Dont laugh....
Ok.. i have to admit... last night has been the scariest evening of my life.... I went out to feed animals about 7ish o'clock. I got to the feed barn and opened the dog door to get dog food. I heard what i thought was a hissing sound... I shined my light in the barrel because sometimes we get possums in the feed barrel and in the summer times, an occasional snake falls in there after the wood rats. This was no "normal" hiss... this was louder.... WAAAAAYYYY LOUDER.... I slammed the door shut and bolted back into the house to get my 12 guage.... I cautiously walked back outside, this time with ol betsy and Capt SPOT.... i shined and shined and didnt see any eyes in the barn... My mountain cur dog was right beside me and he was shaking.... i wasnt understanding his body language, he was whining and squinting his eyes.... i was looking on the outskirts of the barn and found what were some really big paw prints.... about the size of my hand... i knelt down to get a better look and i felt like something was right behind me.... i turned around real slowly and then blasted my light... nothing but my dog... about that time i heard what was a woman screaming bloody murder.... my dog pretty much collapsed and i fell over trying to get the f out of there.... i got to the back patio and shined in all the trees and on the ground and under the barn.... my dogs in the kennel would not even think about coming out of their houses... we've been a few calves short the past few days.... anyone got any idea's on what this is ?? I can hear a quite faint "grunt" if you will... it really sounds like a mix between a frog grunt and a bird chirp... i can repeat it over the phone but cant type it... i have no idea *** this is.... I was thinking black panther ??
**TRUE STORY** About 3 years ago, me and my dad were squirrel hunting behind the house and it was about 5:30PM.... we walked up to this trash pile and proceeded kicking the trash (sticks, limbs, tires, pipe, etc.) to get a rabbit to take off.... this black short haired animal jumped out from under an old 1 horse trailer and bolted into the woods at like 300 mph... faster than i could get my .22 up and find it in the scope... it was a good hundred yards to the woods from where we were.... *** IS THIS ANIMAL !!!!!!!:help: |

i probly would have had to change my boxers. i seen one in our hunting club a while back. Makes you think real hard about getting off that stand after dark

If you are a few calves short and can't find any bones, it ain't a Panther.
I have seen Coyotes go after new born calves and sick ones, but they leave bones behind. No bones/carcass means they are getting out or someone is taking them. I takes a big animal to move a calf out of a fenced in area to where you can't find the bones and skull. |
probley cougar. They'r Baaaacckkk! (never really left, just got thinned out for awhile)I've seen several up where I'm at. Some people still does not believe we have them in Louisiana, but they are here and procreating. And they do like a easy meal. Calf, chicken, dog... getcha some donkey's and put em wiff dem calves , they will keepem at bay. Dey don't like preditors and will go on the offensive side with em.
A friend uh.. wellllll.... spotted one while on his deer stand a couple years ago. After seeing the pic's he had I'd say it was in the 130 lbs class. Kind of young and still had room to grow but it died of lead poisoning. Gives me the willies when I think about it going to my stand early in the mornings. And now with the bears being put allaround it kinda makes me duck hunt more than deer hunt. |
Ray is right but a cat will drag a kill under a barbed wire fence. I would walk the perimiter and look for drag or blood trail. if I noticed a missing calf. Also ride the four wheeler around a few days later an see where the buzzards are or follow the rotten smell.

We used donkey's to keep Coyotes away in Creole.
We got them wild ones for around $75 each. |
were on a 400 acre farm with about ~550 cows... we have donkeys... but only 2
