Big Lake Report 6/18/17

Myself, my 6 year old son and 12 year old daughter picked up a pack of frozen shrimp, launched at Spicers and headed south. We started fishing the southwest portion of Big Lake. The water was pretty choppy and the wind was steady picking up. The name of the game Sunday was look for clean water. We were able to jump to a few different places (reefs and chasing birds) and boxed only about a half dozen keeper trout. Tons of schoolie trout could be caught anywhere and everywhere there was clean water. We caught the trout on Matrix Shad TKO shrimp (picture below) about 30" under a popping cork. We came across a boat that had some outboard problems so we towed them from the middle part of Big Lake down to the ferry landing launch. After they were safely at the dock we went back to Big Lake and fished for reds against the grass on the eastern side of the lake. All reds were caught on the same Matrix Shad TKO shrimp tipped with dead shrimp. We boxed a few reds then decided to call it day because it was getting HOT. I forgot to take pictures of the fish on this trip before I cleaned them. Most of this trip I was working with my son trying to get him to where he can fish independently. He was able to put his own market bait on his hook threading it to where it wouldn't come off when he casted, cast, work the bite, set the hook, reel it in, and get his first fish all by himself in the boat. It was just a little croaker, but he did it all by himself. My daughter has been independently fishing for a while so she was doing her own thing most of the trip. When we got home my daughter cleaned the boat for me for fathers day. It was great time with the kids.

Good job. Put a life jacket on that youngster. That's a high dollar ticket. Had mine holding the rope at the dock while I backed down. He wanted to jump in and ride it up the trailer with me. He'd taken his jacket off, I didn't even think about it. We went maybe 30' in the boat from dock to trailer. Green jeans was waiting on me. Been years but I think it cost me $180.

Kids under 16 can fish without life jacket while motor is not running or under power as law states |
He and all other children on my boat wear life jackets under the following conditions; the big motor is on, we're somewhere where there is strong current, if it's cold and they are wearing layers or a jacket that would effect their swimming ability, in rough water, or whenever any of us thinks it's needed. Louisiana law states that a life jacket must be worn when the vessel is under way (when the main motor is in use). We far surpass those guidelines with our own common sense. I have four mustang survival hydrostatic life jackets that the adults wear when we're making runs more than from one group of birds to another or when it's cold and we're bundled up. I've gone overboard before in my younger years and was lucky to make it out of the situation. Some guests on my boat don't like my rules but to me I t's not worth the risk. Anything can happen out there. I've never had anyone tell me they didn't want to go back out with me, so it must not be that bad.

Awesome trip! I can't wait to get my 5 years old fishing independently. It's a fulltime job and my fishing time is limited when he's with me. Still enjoyable to see him get excited when he catches though.
