Prepping food for hunt

Started prepping food to vacuum pack for 2 week bow trip Illinois! Deer meat chili & a deer ground/deer sausage vegetable soup. Already made a beef/deer/ deer sausage stew, no pic.

Looks good.... I do the same thing. Makes it easy not having to cook as much.

Food looks great but I'm more jealous about the trip north! Public land?

We do the same. Headed north to Illinois on the 5th of November.

Nice! Should be some big boys on the hunt for some tail that time of year up there. Good luck and keep us posted.

Looks good!

How do you vacuum pack that? Do you use the vaccum pack containers?

On my vacuum packer there is a pulse button. You have to hold it down for the machine to suck and it stops when you let go. If I do anything liquid in the bags I just let the button go right before it gets to the top of the bag then press seal.

Well the way we do it since it is only for about a month, I freeze in zip bag, then vacuum pack it. In a good ice chest with 2 meals a day for typically 13 days, covered with ice, will stay frozen 11 days. Realize this isn't for vacuum packing for 6-12 months. The only thing we have to cook while camping is rice & noodles. We tent camp, 12X20 sealed tent, with tarp over not touching tent to help in case of rain. Use the box trailer for the kitchen. Hang a shower bucket for shower which can get chilly when its in the 50's.

Man, that's aweosme! I'm going to start doing my research and try to put something like that together for next season up there with my dad and brother. I've been wanting to do something like that for years.

The tent is from Cabelas, with floor. Just stretch rope with a ratchet strap, use a plastic tarp & tie off both ends or it doesn't stay stretched. Also we put a tarp on ground to help protect bottom of tent. Just make sure upper tarp doesn't touch tent or could get moisture. We use cheap shower curtains to make a shower stall to stay out of wind using PVC for frame.

You can freeze anything liquid in a plastic container . pop it out of the container and then vacuum seal .

Hunting Merriams in South Dakota at the end of April. Got down to 6 degrees or maybe it was 16, something really cold.

DannyI 10-05-2017 09:26 PM

Yes that's cold, hunted 1 year Illinois in the single digits & wasn't prepared clothing wise, like to froze.
