Electrical Genius's

Need an Electrical Genius to check out boat motor and 4 wheeler, neither one want to start. I am neither electrical or genius so any help would be appreciated.:shaking: Got Tricians in da hood but can't seem to get any down to my crib with the little yeller box.

Give us some more information of your problem......maybe can help.

Most engines are not that complicated.

Ray 02-15-2010 03:43 PM

What kind of motor is it?

Like Gerald asks, does it turn over, click, lights, fires, coughs.

Check da kill switches on both.

outboard, yamaha and does nothing, battry is hot, trim does a fast clicking like a tazer. I believe there is a short or loose connection but again I am no genius. Found one loose wire, tightened it and still no power.:pissed:

4 Wheeler, push starter and only hear clicking from solienod, rockit and the danm thing will start on occasion when it wants to. I can pull start it thought on first pull pain in the azz to bring a person to be the starter everytime I go to the field to train dogs with it.:rotfl:

how do you know your batteries are good. are you putting a load on them.... voltage will not tell you if they are good just if they are charged. If you have a dead cell or multiple dead cells it will still read 12 + volts but when you load it, it will drop off fast. would try this.

Ray 02-15-2010 03:59 PM

On the outboard, check all the ground connections. Those are usually the first place corrosion builds up. Pull each one and clean. Spray some kind of coating to protect them from future corrosion.

Ray 02-15-2010 03:59 PM

If you have a bad cell in the battery, you can still read 12 volts. Jump from your truck engine to see if it is the battery or the boat.

also on your 4 wheeler is it a constant clicking or is it one click from the solenoid engaging

one click

adamsfence 02-15-2010 04:08 PM

my lawn mower did something like that.....might not be the same but i had to get the valves (i think) adjusted. It would act like the battery wasn't strong enough to turn it over. i would check the batteries and wiring before i brought it to a mechanic though.....only other thing if power is making it to all the way to the starter than it has to be the starter or something mech. so just trace it out with a volt meter and see where you loose power

Raymond 02-15-2010 04:22 PM

What's a volt meter??????????

Gerald 02-15-2010 04:48 PM

Here is something on volt meters.

http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_6/chpt_2/1.html

volt meter can be used to check to see it you have power getting to that location.

Put one lead [black] on the ground [negative] and red lead to what you want to check.

have voltmeter and will travel, sounds like the one click on your fourwheeler is actually the solenoid sending power but maybe not getting a good connection at the starter. Wanna try to hook up one afternoon and take a look? if so tell me a day I believe everyday but maybe tomorrow and today is good for me.

Solenoid.....the contacts inside a solenoid due get burned and stop working. Think of a solenoid as a switch......this switch when it turns on, puts power to the starter motor. A solenoid usually has at least 4 wire.....2 small wires and 2 big wires. There may be other small wires.

When you turn the "start" switch, this connects power to one of the small wires on the switch. When this wire gets power, it sends electrical current inside to a coil of wires that makes an electrical magnet. This magnet then pulls a piece of metal up and this makes a "contact" to complete annother connection with the "Big" wires. This sends power to the starter.

If the contact point.....inside the selenoid....get burned, you usually only hear "1" click. If the batter is low, or the wires are not making good connections.....you will hear a Clicking noise.

A solenoid can be checked to see if it is working.......but this would be harder to explain. PM me if you want to talk more about this.

Gerald 02-15-2010 05:11 PM

Also, if the solenoid is ok......the brushes or connecting wire inside the starter could be bad.

Been there.....replaced that too. Way Way cheeper to fix starter motor than to buy a new one.
