Big Lake making national news again....

In the new March edition of Saltwater Sportsman Traveling Fisherman section of Best Worldwide Fishing spots for March:

Spotted Sea Trout:
1st choice - Louisiana
2nd choice - Florida
" Louisiana waters will provide superb trout action in areas including the renowned Lake Calcasieu. Artificial lures work great, but its also hard to beat a live shrimp or pinfish soaked on grass flats. Some large trout will be taken by anglers in the Mosquito Lagoon area on Floridas east coast."

Also

Red Drum:
1st choice - Louisiana
2nd choice - Florida
"Redfish action in Louisiana should be excellent this month as temperatures moderate and the fish begin to move. Actually, the entire Gulf Coast should have good redfish action, as will waters on the Indian River lagoon along Florida's east coast, where you'll find big fish and big schools."

Maybe some of you will now realize the intense pressure this estuary faces year round, not just from locals, but from many traveling fisherman as well. Just look at the recent activity of this board. You've got a post from FL & TX fisherman as an example. We are lucky to have world class fishing in our "backyard." Lets do a good job of taking care of it for ourselves and future generations!

Saltwater bream huu, well if Saltwater Magazine said to use em then they must work.

I have used pin fish at the rigs for AJ's, Ling, and Shark but never heard of anyone using them for Trout.

LaAngler 02-23-2010 10:19 AM

pinfish come up when the water gets salty in the summer, i caught a ton of them on skrimpz

so for trout and redfish LA took #1, cool.

I'm guessing the pinfish and grass flats comments was their segway into the Florida part of the story.

Hebert 02-23-2010 11:39 AM

damn..thought i was gonna get to use my pinfish trap here lol

SULPHITE 02-23-2010 11:40 AM

yeah I know it was just funny...grass flats...

Dink 02-23-2010 11:42 AM

In Fla, you put a live pintail on a grass flat next to a deep channel, or in the channel and let the trout follow it up onto he flat.....either way the trout will come get it......out in east Fla a 10 to 12lb trout is nearly a daily thing...........must be nice!!??

cmdrost 02-23-2010 12:27 PM

well FL limits are only 5 per person with 1 over 25". You want to catch that many big fish, gotta start releasing more!

For a true conservationist...there's no reason to keep 'em.

actually it's because of the habitat in the indian/banana river lagoon

you wont find a 10 lber on the west coast

now i don't doubt that the limit helps but it was too little too late for florida, high salinity and lack of freshwater marsh/nutrients hurts
