stuck at the weir

Went fishing at big lake monday. managed to keep 5 reds. exciting part of the day was watching a boat get stuck sideways in the weir. messed his big champion up. I felt bad for the guy, but what can you do.

no . but wish i had a video camera. it looked like a guide to. think he would no how to drive through it.

SULPHITE 03-18-2010 10:41 AM

going into the marsh or out?

He went in and got turned?? Wow.....would've been something to see.

mako1 03-18-2010 10:57 AM

he was coming out of the marsh. I dont know what he was trying to do. he tried to ease up to it to check the depth i guess. well the current was to strong and it turned his boat sideways. you could hear the fiberclass crash against that concrete. then when he finally got through he came in backwards through the weir. scratched his motor all up.

SULPHITE 03-18-2010 12:33 PM

geezzz...gotta gun'er and commit or dats it!!!

Jordan 03-18-2010 12:43 PM

That sucks. The weirs don't budge. Ask Ray..... :thefinger:

mako1 03-18-2010 12:54 PM

no . that concrete didnt have a scratch on it. lol. but that good looking champion did.

To me, it is not worth fishing close to the weir (FINE) or even going thru them unless I had a small boat!! Amazing what some will do to catch a black or red drum!

BTW, my 2 uncles and me hit the lake yesterday morning......21 specs (not a one needed to be measured) and 13 reds (plus we released 2 over 27").......Best part was you did not even have to hit the weirs! Majority of the fish were caught on pearl\chart Jerk Jr (thanks Mikedtiger).

mako1 03-18-2010 01:03 PM

well i dont know the lake that well . so after 4hrs of catching nothing monday the weirs were our last option. the water was so muddy. what makes it that dirty down there. the wind and rain?

all star rod 03-18-2010 01:05 PM

Yesterday the North part of the lake was average but as you ran a little further South the water got very clear. I would assume the fresh water has a lot to do with making it muddy plus the wind. However, Big Lake really does clear-up fast once the winds die down.

we fished the east bank monday. the week before we limited out in 2 hrs there. monday we didnt even get a bite. there was a north wind blowing to, which made it tough to fish. You could see the reds swimming after shad at one of the weirs but we couldnt hardly get them to bite. Guess we should of had live bait.

I would assume REDS, not trout.....
If the weather is nice this weekend, the lake will be PACKED.....

mako1 03-18-2010 01:39 PM

yup reds. im just a weekend warrior pretty much. i live 2 hrs away, so only get down there on the weekends. i sure would like to find some trout though. any suggestions when the water gets better. Do the trout ever get up on the east bank?

Shawn Braquet 03-18-2010 03:23 PM

Commissary point holds trout, and outside of lamberts weirs there is a reef that holds some fish from time to time, just a matter of getting out there and figuring them little creatures out. Hit W up he does a lot better job of it than I do.

I have seen 2 boats in the wier sideways and 3 people fall out and get sucked through them(and not through the big hole). How no one died I have no idea.

Ray 03-18-2010 06:49 PM

I bumped one time. Never got any damage.
I seen a guide crunch a troll motor going out.
