advertising help

I am looking to advertise in an area we are expanding to start to cover. What have you buisness owners found that works the best. Newspaper TV, radio or any thing else you can think of. I currently run ads in our local paper but mainly live off word of mouth. well being new to this area we don't have that yet.

if you don't own a business Feel free to chime in if you have any suggestions as far as where you look for your services. besides yellow pages and internet.........

adamsfence 03-31-2010 04:13 PM

i was but im trying to target a specific area and i would hate to turn people away because we don't go that far......in my business when i send my crew a long way prices go up. im not out to jip noone so i turn business over to locals or tell them up front that i am going to be higher than someone else closer. I still do alot of jobs out of our area, just for the fact that people know we do a good job and are willing to pay. But i try to stay local

I'm in the print media business so take this for what it's worth...

The product or service you sell will partly determine where you should advertise. Is it business to business? Retail? Home Improvement? etc. I'm guessing you do fences...

You can usually find a media outlet that targets your niche. Sometimes it may be talk radio or business pub for b2b, it may be niche women's magazines for retail and might be outdoor living mags for what you do.

For mass exposure I would do billboards, radio and the local newspaper. They can be expensive. If you can narrow your buyers down a bit and find a media that better targets them then that's your best channel of communication.

This is only based on my own experiences:

I found that mailers (by zip code) and radio, don't do squat...

What works for us is anything locally published. Put a discount of some sort within your ad and watch it go...

good luck

I do fence work

simplepeddler 03-31-2010 06:06 PM

The local high school athletic programs work for us.

it really works....

Sponsorship from 4H to Academic Lettermans Jackets for graduating seniors that have kept a 3.0 or better for four years.

If fact, that is the ONLY way we go to the market

i do this locally and was thinking of trying this in alexandria where we are trying to expand. there are so many schools there though

Pick the ones with winning records and strong booster clubs.......
Don't forget the Band nerds and Book nerds......

Band likely has more members, which means more parents..........

when i signed my policy and every year i renew it they ask me . also go to new subdivision that are beung built hook up with the biggest contractor in the neighborhood offer him comission or a small kick back to build fences after he closes on the houses . all it takes is a foot in the door . i have done houses for cheap just to get into a neighborhood and now i trim for every builder and frame for 1/2 of them . if you do honest quality work all you need is someone to give you a chance you just have to be able to sell them on why they should give you a shot

Check with the local police first..............it is illegal to put out sign like that in Calcasieu parish.

Just because lots of business do it.....does not make it ok.

Loneshark 03-31-2010 11:09 PM

Hit up the builder's association and realtors in the area. Just ask them that they keep you in mind when they have a job. They probably will have another crew they use but if they need something asap and their guy is busy they will call. Once they do. Don't screw up and you hav the chance to become the prefered vendor.

Sounds like you got it figured out Peddler, and it goes to a good cause.
Do you get a better tax break because these programs are non-profit?
