Fishing Forecast with Oil Spill

Not knowing squat about the oil industry, is it possible for this disaster to destroy the fishing in Big Lake, Rockefeller, etc...?

LaAngler 04-30-2010 03:03 PM

not likely.....YET...i suppose anything is possible until oil leak is stopped.

i would say the 25 fish trout limit may be in danger in the future

Hebert 04-30-2010 03:38 PM

all the east siders will be coming over to big lake to fish W's holes lol

I think the limits for trout will be changed also...they been looking for a crisis..now they have one...

Reverend Redfish 04-30-2010 03:43 PM

Based on what you've just said, I'm seeing a crazy, very busy lake with extra high fishing pressure put on them trout for this summer. This will make for some good stories though...

I do not think what will happen; however, if it does I think we will be in BIG TROUBLE due to the spill!!!!!

Just heard where they said the oyster industry won't be affected b/c they are below the "oil levels". Can this be the same regarding fish?

That's bad information. Will you eat an oyster that grew under an oil slick. They filter water thru their body for food. They are spraying thousands of gallons of disbersents and emulsifiers and coagulants on the slick that they fear may enter the food chain...

I mean me personally, I would think so. Only thing is if they eat it while feeding. I mean the fish can get away from it in most cases but who knows. maybe they not that smart, may just deal with it till they die. but I think anything on the top will be hurt more than the bottom, but Im far from a biologist so anyone else?

I hear ya. I was surprised to him say it myself.

I think most lakes and bays like vermillin bay and biglake will be okay as long as we don't get a real high tide. I think it would be pretty easy to block off the the access to these areas with oil-booms. The beaches are a completely different story.

eman 04-30-2010 06:23 PM

booms

w/ 4 - 6 ft seas the booms are useless no matter where they are .

Montauk17 04-30-2010 06:31 PM

It's a waiting game, nobody knows whats going to happen. The booms only slow down the oil,not stop it. I just heard they are going to place booms to protect vermillion bay to cameron parish.

trout

the trout and shrimp can run from bad water. the oysters can't.
IMHO this will be a killerin the oyster industry and will hurt the shrimp harvest next year . also the trout fishing will suffer next year and the year after.
The oil will kill the larval shrimp and the larval trout, meaning no recruitment in years to follow.

BottomOfTheBoot 04-30-2010 06:43 PM

how easy is it to get oil off of a Top Dog or She Pup?

simplepeddler 04-30-2010 06:44 PM

everything will be affected in my opinion.
The tree huggers will use this to push hard for any limitations they can get. From oil rigs to fishing limits to fishing period.

The pressure will be on hard in the areas unaffected.
Marinas may indeed go out of business or limited services will be there.
Progression from Katrina will in affect halt for a time being.

BP would do themselves a big favor if they hired all the shrimpers to somehow assist in cleanup.

I know that the boat rental business is pegged.
Went by Gaudet's today and he has been getting called for new boats, used boats, whatever the heck floats.

While this tragedy will affect our fishing for maybe forever.........MANY folks are fixing to get filthy *** rich over this.

Buy stock in cleaning companies............

:*****: I feel guilty for laughing,

On a serious note though , I hate to see any water system get hit by this. If the oil goes anywhere , I hope its east. But im afraid that it will have a ripple effect along the whole coast.
