Another vote for Cannon. I have a Cannon. Mine is a EOS 20D that I have owned for about 5 years. I have though of getting a new camera but this one takes amazing pics and the newer cameras are not that much better to justify the cost. The main diff to me from the higher end Cannons and the Rebels would the be that the Rebel has a pastic body. It is a great SLR for someone just starting out. My neighbor shoots professionally with a Rebel. I would however recommend that you then invest in a good telephoto lens. 90% of the photos you take will be with the kit lens that comes with the camera it is a pretty good lens. However, when you buy a telephoto lens get the best you can afford. If you decide you enjoy taking pictures then you can use the lens on a nicer camera later. If you buy cheap you will not be happy with the pics you take. Whatever you do I also recommend that you buy from B&H they have the best prices, fast shipping and are easy to deal with. I buy all of my stuff from them. I was never much of one to take pictures. I always had cheap point and shoot cameras. One year like you my wife asked for a nice camera I read and read and finally decided on Cannon. I have never regretted it once and I am sure you won't either. There is a reason they are the number one Digital SLR camera in the world. And don't worry about all those buttons. You can use them as point and shoot too. Very easy to use and take great photos in auto.
