What happens is the wear plate and housing forms groves from the impeller spinning the same rpm's as the crankshaft cause wear from friction over time. If you put a new impeller with a worn down wear plate and housing you will loose water pressure from water seeping into those wear groves. This may not be your problem but I would not rule it out either. If you take the pressure line off of the gauge and the fitting on the block and shoot compressed air through it to clean it out and you still have low pressure you need to look elsewhere. Could be a falty gauge,poppet valve,or water pump. Don't assume it is the poppet without checking everything.
