$300 will get you more than you will ever use in a GPS. I have used a Garmin eTrex for several years and they do everything I need. It comes with topo maps and software where you can plug up your GPS to the computer and make maps with it. I would recommend this one to anyone that is just starting to use one, they are relatively simple to learn and will do more than you will ever need, even has solunar tables to see when the best hunt/fish times are. With a clear signal of the sky which you will likely have elk hunting, the accuracy will be about 10 feet, so more than you will ever need. I was 'forced' to get a new fancy expensive one for work but still use the eTrex for my personal use. I would also recommend the DeLorme unit, I really looked into those and there was a fairly cheap unit that had aerial photos and topo maps with it.
Topo maps are gonna be a big advantage where you are going also, not so much in Louisiana, but will help you navigate the easiest routes in the mountains. Just remember that when those lines on the topo are close together it = steep terrain!
