I love when kids get knifes handed down!!! I use a Lansky on all my skinning knifes. It takes a long time to get the angles on hard steel knife (Buck), but once the angle is there, they resharpen quickly. Old Buck knifes are the best, but people that have opposing angles on the edge of the blade hate them. Sounds like your knife has been passed on the stone a few times and it does not have a matching angle to each side. I have spent countless hours w/ the Lansky in my lap wathcing TV before a knife "got right". Good Luck!
