I was washing my curado with the hose and sometimes soaking it in a bucket of water. After a year and a half.....three of the bearings inside were badly rusted. Now I either wipe off the reel or very lightly rinse off the reel. I open up the reel every 3 to 6 fishing trips and put a drop of oil on the bearings and sometime do a little cleaning.

It has been 4+ years since having the bearing replaced and the reel still preforms very well.
Yeah I agree with that its the worst thing you can ever do to a reel, I learned the hard way when I was younger. The best thing is just spray with a light mist of water then put oil on the bearings. The problem with to much water is if you rinse them off then let them sit up for a while with water on the bearings they will rust.
