I had something very similar happen to me about 12 years ago. My youngest son is mentally disabled in that he was born with Down Syndrome. He and I are very close. He was 8 yrs old at the time and I was involved in a matter at work that had me working late and weekends for several months. I got home one day and he took me by my hand and led me to my closet. I keep a pair of sweat shorts hanging on a hook on the inside of my closet door and I usually put them home when I get home from work and I have no plans to go anywhere. He opened my door and pointed at the shorts and said,"Put those on Daddy" It was his way of saying please don't go back to the office again tonight. After a hug and a whole lot of tears I did just what he suggested. They may be little, they may even be mentally challenged but the y all need and want us when they are little. AND they grow up way too fast. Love em while you can!
