I've done this a lot working on trailers @ my dads buddy's boat shop for extra money as a kid.
Get a good size pan put a half gallon of diesel in it an old rag an scotchbrite pad and give em a bath! The diesel goes a long way @ $3.50 a gal.! They'll come clean!
