If you think about it both these reasons make sense...there are plenty of people that buy boats that don't really know what they are doing, they see a nice boat that their buddy has and go buy it, get out on the water and get to potlicking. These are the same people that will leave a tackle bag on the deck then open the hatch to grab some sunscreen or snacks for the kiddos and watch the gear fall overboard.

Yall can share your opinions, to each his own I don't really care... If you want to know the real reason contact the boat manufacturer.
Most skiffs manufactures that are concerned with loading the boat from the outside make their hatches open from back to front.
