Oh, in addition, fuel consumption was surprisingly good. I think we got about 1.2-1.4 mpg at a 38 mph easy cruise at 3900-4000 rpm (my pop at the helm....I liked to run it at 4500 rpm for about 42mph but fuel consumption was up to about 1.1mpg). This boat had a 25 deg. deadrise at the stern so it took some hp to keep it up on the step. The fuel burn on the Mercs was better than I expected.
That being said....My current boat (24' Blue Wave PB) has a 250 Yammy 4stroke. I like not having to keep a 2stroke oil reservoir topped off and I like the low end torque for getting out the hole but, when shopping for it, if the hull I liked had the Optimax I would have been just fine with it.
