in the past if you ran premium gas it would make the engines run a little hotter and in the long run it could shorten an engines life span and that's why it wasn't recommended back then but with todays engines they are made better and have much better cooling systems so I don't think it matters anymore.

I was just looking at the new tohatsu engines and for the whole line they say it runs on 87 octane but will perform much better and it is recommended that you use 89 octane gas for them.

if I buy a new motor I will use the 89 octane premium gas they suggest is best for the motors.

bottom line is you should only use what your year motor recommends and don't worry about what the newer models use
