Roughly how close would you have to wade to those to be able to cast a 6000 series reel with a 2-3 oz. weight and a couple chunks of mullet on to get between that first and second cut? I'll be on the beach Sunday and Monday. It's mainly a relax with the wife trip, but I'll most certainly be doing some fishing.
The sand bars tend to shift a bit. We haven't fished W of Holly Beach. At Holly Beach proper, the first sandbar was about 75 yards from dry ground the day we fished it. With the stiff breeze, we kept landing our baits right on it. We moved down to the restored beach between Holly Beach and the ship channel. The first sandbar was about 50 yards from dry ground and we were able to easily cast past it. The trough was about 4 feet deep where we were fishing, but we watched the Asian fellows walk out to the first sandbar in water about 2 feet deep. Some went out even further into chest deep water.

If your casting distance is more limited or you prefer not to wade, I recommend Rutherford beach. The water gets deep fast enough that often you cannot even tell where the sandbar is and casting past it is not important.

In still air or with a tail wind, we can cast about 100 yards using 12' Ugly Stiks and the "pendulum" casting technique shown in YouTube videos. Crab catches a lot of air and a 12-15 mph S wind really reduces casting distances. I think we'll have some drop leaders and mullet available next time we have a stiff S wind, or just fish Rutherford. We usually use Carolina rigs and crabs.

I'm sure some folks make bull reds work at the jetties W of Holly Beach, but it always seemed a bit shallow for our techniques.
