The southern tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula may be best known for tourist mecca Cabo San Lucas, but for fisherman there are other options which offer even better fishing without the bright lights and noise of CSL. Just 21 miles from Cabo, the charter operation Gordo Banks Pangas operates one of the top fleets in the area from a charming fishing town that is situated right in the middle of the best fishing grounds in southern Baja.

Gordo Banks Pangas is run by Eric Brictson, an expat who settled in San Jose del Cabo in 1985. Eric, a seasoned fisherman who spent years exploring coastal California and Oregon, oversees virtually all aspects of the operation. This allows Gordo Banks customers to experience the authenticity of fishing with a local panga captain while enjoying the professionalism expected from a larger charter service.

Although fishing is excellent year round, Brictson indicates that peak gamefish migrations typically occur during April through November, when marlin, wahoo, dorado and sailfish are commonly caught in the warmer currents that move through. Yellowfin tuna are caught year round, and Gordo Banks’ local captains have a variety of excellent bottom spots where grouper, pargo (snapper) and amberjack can almost always be found.

The fleet consists of a variety of “pangas” – Mexican style center console boats that are small but extremely seaworthy. The pangas range in size from 22’ to the 26’ “super pangas”, and Gordo Banks also has larger cabin cruisers available up to 33’. Even the smallest pangas are equipped excellent equipment including Seeker and Calstar rods and Penn and Shimano reels.

Gordo Banks Pangas is located in the fishing village of La Playa, which now boasts the newly developed Puerto Los Cabos Marina. La Playa is just minutes away from historic San Jose del Cabo and is ideally situated at the gateway of the Sea of Cortez, where unique marine habitat creates the richest fishing grounds off of the Los Cabos region.
