My girlfriend is a tech vet and does show dogs. I'll ask for some reputable breeders on the sporting side.

The problem with labs is every Tom, ****, and Harry breeds them. Her vet clinic does a lot of knees, hips, etc as a result. You would not believe the amount of X-rays and tests the good breeders do to ensure a good bloodline that's free from a history of medical problems and neurological issues.

That being said I've got a nice rescue dog and she has been trouble free but now after hearing all the cases she has experienced each day, I wouldn't recommend looking on Craigslist for any old dog.
