First, Make an educated guess as to what depth of water will yield highest probability of holding the largest concentration of fish based on recent weather patterns and tidal conditions (shallow 1-2, medium2-4, deep >4).

Next divide the water column you decide to fish into thirds and try and once again decide where the highest concentration of fish will be holding. Choose a lure that allows you to thoroughly fish that zone (top water plug, jig, suspending).

Last, watch for signs. This time of year bait is key. Mullet are the primary targets for trout on flats adjacent to deep water.
